Smoke Screen is a social media–focused art research project that combines science and storytelling to expose myths about nicotine and tobacco. Our goal is to raise public health literacy in Kenya — specifically among young adults aged 25–45 in Nairobi and Mombasa — by translating complex medical research into memorable, shareable content.
Tobacco harm reduction refers to strategies that help smokers transition from high-risk combustible cigarettes to lower-risk alternatives, such as nicotine replacement therapies or regulated reduced-risk products. The goal is not always immediate quitting — it’s reducing harm where quitting is difficult. Many Kenyans are unaware that these options exist, where to find them, or how much they cost. We aim to change that.
We are currently conducting audio interviews with smokers, doctors, and harm reduction specialists in Nairobi and Mombasa. If you are a smoker willing to share your experience, or a healthcare professional with insights on tobacco cessation, we would love to hear from you. Your voice — anonymized if you prefer — could become part of our animated series. Reach out through our website contact form to get involved.
This project is supported by the KAC Scholarship Programme 2026. And Funding for the Programme has been provided, via a grant from the Global Action to End Smoking
